1 Corinthians 2:11-13
For who among men knows the thoughts of a man except the man’s spirit within him? In the same way no one knows the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God. We have not received the spirit of the world but the Spirit who is from God, that we may understand what God has freely given us. This is what we speak, not in words taught us by human wisdom but in words taught by the Spirit, expressing spiritual truths in spiritual words.

Understanding the Holy Spirit was one of the hardest aspects of my faith walk. I often wondered what it looked like, what changes occurred in me, what others saw in me to show fruits of the working of the Holy Spirit in me and so on. For someone who is still at the foot of the faith mountain, I am learning the hard way by asking, reading, seeking, praying and God who is the most patient teacher helps me understand Him bit by bit, day by day. Today as I read Paul’s letter to the Church in Corinth regarding the Holy Spirit, my eyes opened to one more truth.

The fragrance of a rose is always going to that of a rose. Plant it among sunflowers or in the forest and it’s fragrance should be that of a rose. We as humans will continue to operate as humans, sinful in our thinking and always causing more damage to ourselves and our environment. However, when we are no longer driven by the same spirit that drives us to act like humans, things change. This is not possible naturally because by nature, we are still human. However, when we are born again by accepting Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior, we are filled with God’s own spirit, which transforms us from the very core. We are no longer driven by human desire but by God’s heart. We still have the ability to choose and sometimes make bad choices but the spirit burdens our conscience which brings us back on our knees before the Lord asking for forgiveness. Paul here reminds us that we are driven by this spirit, the Holy Spirit, and therefore our wisdom is God’s wisdom and our understanding is His. Praise God for His goodness to us!

Acts 11:22-26
News of this reached the ears of the church at Jerusalem, and they sent Barnabas to Antioch. When he arrived and saw the evidence of the grace of God, he was glad and encouraged them all to remain true to the Lord with all their hearts. He was a good man, full of the Holy Spirit and faith, and a great number of people were brought to the Lord. Then Barnabas went to Tarsus to look for Saul, and when he found him, he brought him to Antioch. So for a whole year Barnabas and Saul met with the church and taught great numbers of people. The disciples were called Christians first at Antioch.

The news that brought Barnabas out to Antioch from the comforts of his home was that of Christ being preached and many submitting their lives to God’s leading in places as far as Phoenicia, Cyprus and Antioch. It says that Barnabas was a good man, full of the Holy Spirit and faith and a great number of people were brought to the Lord through him. That sounds fair and investing him into that ministry was a great idea but why Saul? The last time he tried, he was getting in trouble with the officials and had to taken away in hiding by the believers there. What was the Lord doing and what is his direction to us today through this passage?

In recent weeks, I’ve been raving about the training I’ve been receiving at my new job. The content is from top educational institutions and the investment in time and resources by my bank in me is something I can never imagine. It’s something I know God blessed me with and was not because of anything I did or deserved. However, when I compare this to the awesomeness of my Christian education through God’s own words, nothing compares! What is most amazing is that God invests his Holy Spirit in people who themselves may not make the worldly cut for their roles but God uses them to glorify himself. We’re all broken clay pots restored by the Holy Spirit for God’s use. Lets go out and fulfill God’s call in our lives to impact the generations for HIM!
