Leviticus 6:1-2,5-6,12,18,30 (NIV, @2011) The LORD said to Moses: “If anyone sins and is unfaithful to the LORD by deceiving a neighbor about something entrusted to them or left in their care or about something stolen, or if they cheat their neighbor… or whatever it was they swore falsely about. They must make restitution in full, add a fifth of the value to it and give it all to the owner on the day they present their guilt offering. And as a penalty they must bring to the priest, that is, to the LORD, their guilt offering, a ram from the flock, one without defect and of the proper value… The fire on the altar must be kept burning; it must not go out. Every morning the priest is to add firewood and arrange the burnt offering on the fire and burn the fat of the fellowship offerings on it… Any male descendant of Aaron may eat it. For all generations to come it is his perpetual share of the food offerings presented to the LORD. Whatever touches them will become holy’”… But any sin offering whose blood is brought into the tent of meeting to make atonement in the Holy Place must not be eaten; it must be burned up.

God certainly had serious hangups about sin and ensured He communicated His disgust of sin and the sinner and also provided a means for His people, the Israelites to make peace with Him.

The number of sacrifices, the types and the purposes ensured there was enough for the priests themselves and that the Lord’s tabernacle would never be without constant offering.

What is God’s desire for us today that is communicated through this historic text recorded around 1,445 BC? (more…)

Exodus 21:1-2,12,15,23-25,35 “These are the laws you are to set before them: “If you buy a Hebrew servant, he is to serve you for six years. But in the seventh year, he shall go free, without paying anything… “Anyone who strikes a man and kills him shall surely be put to death… “Anyone who attacks his father or his mother must be put to death… But if there is serious injury, you are to take life for life, eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot, burn for burn, wound for wound, bruise for bruise… “If a man’s bull injures the bull of another and it dies, they are to sell the live one and divide both the money and the dead animal equally.

A bizarre set of laws that certainly confound logic but I am sure they were valid for the time they were revealed when there was no law and morality had no meaning among the nation of Israel who were wandering in the desert.

It seems like God did not condemn slavery and that any wrong action could simply be excused by a payment! What relevance do these laws have for us today in our Christian walk of faith? (more…)

1 Corinthians 7:17, 19, 23
Nevertheless, each one should retain the place in life that the Lord assigned to him and to which God has called him. This is the rule I lay down in all the churches.… Circumcision is nothing and uncircumcision is nothing. Keeping God’s commands is what counts… You were bought at a price; do not become slaves of men.

I’ve spent most of my day thinking about these verses and trying to understand what my place is where our Lord Jesus has assigned me to? I am a husband, dad, brother, son, friend, neighbour, tenant, colleague, subordinate, immigrant, national, foreigner, etc. Am I better off in each role and am I bad at any? Does my culture differentiate me, does my faith necessitate that I amend my relationships, am I subservient to others or am I too forceful? What is God instructing us?

It is the duty of every Christian to be content with what the Lord has blessed them with. Our comfort and happiness depends on what we are to Christ, not what we are in the world. No one should try to make his faith or religion a reason to break any natural obligations like marriage. We should quietly and happily deal with the situation we are placed by God’s grace and seek ways to glorify Him. Our lives are not our own but His who gave His life to save ours. He has placed us in our situations to glorify Him and become more like Him. Hope you agree with me and are willing to be slave to Christ rather than a slave to the world?
