Numbers 24:1-9,15-19 By now Balaam realized that the Lord was determined to bless Israel, so he did not resort to divination as before. Instead, he turned and looked out toward the wilderness, where he saw the people of Israel camped, tribe by tribe. Then the Spirit of God came upon him, and this is the message he delivered: “This is the message of Balaam son of Beor, the message of the man whose eyes see clearly, the message of one who hears the words of God, who sees a vision from the Almighty, who bows down with eyes wide open: How beautiful are your tents, O Jacob; how lovely are your homes, O Israel! They spread before me like palm groves, like gardens by the riverside. They are like tall trees planted by the Lord, like cedars beside the waters. Water will flow from their buckets; their offspring have all they need. Their king will be greater than Agag; their kingdom will be exalted. God brought them out of Egypt; for them he is as strong as a wild ox. He devours all the nations that oppose him, breaking their bones in pieces, shooting them with arrows. Like a lion, Israel crouches and lies down; like a lioness, who dares to arouse her? Blessed is everyone who blesses you, O Israel, and cursed is everyone who curses you”… This is the message Balaam delivered: “This is the message of Balaam son of Beor, the message of the man whose eyes see clearly, the message of one who hears the words of God, who has knowledge from the Most High, who sees a vision from the Almighty, who bows down with eyes wide open: I see him, but not here and now. I perceive him, but far in the distant future. A star will rise from Jacob; a scepter will emerge from Israel. It will crush the foreheads of Moab’s people, cracking the skulls of the people of Sheth. Edom will be taken over, and Seir, its enemy, will be conquered, while Israel marches on in triumph. A ruler will rise in Jacob who will destroy the survivors of Ir.”

Balaam, the renowned diviner of the land undergoes a character transformation as noted in the last 2 chapters and now speaks wisdom that can only come from God. How is this relevant to us today? (more…)

Exodus 23:10-11,13,20-22,29-30 “For six years you are to sow your fields and harvest the crops, but during the seventh year let the land lie unplowed and unused. Then the poor among your people may get food from it, and the wild animals may eat what they leave. Do the same with your vineyard and your olive grove… “Be careful to do everything I have said to you. Do not invoke the names of other gods; do not let them be heard on your lips… “See, I am sending an angel ahead of you to guard you along the way and to bring you to the place I have prepared. Pay attention to him and listen to what he says. Do not rebel against him; he will not forgive your rebellion, since my Name is in him. If you listen carefully to what he says and do all that I say, I will be an enemy to your enemies and will oppose those who oppose you… But I will not drive them out in a single year, because the land would become desolate and the wild animals too numerous for you. Little by little I will drive them out before you, until you have increased enough to take possession of the land.

Being agrarian and shepherds by profession, these laws were written to deal with every issue the Israelites might encounter but the one purpose they were given these laws was to keep them walking God’s path and not falling away.

Today we do not follow these laws and therefore we wonder what God’s purpose is in revealing this to us? (more…)

2 Thessalonians 2:3-4
Don’t let anyone deceive you in any way, for [that day will not come] until the rebellion occurs and the man of lawlessness is revealed, the man doomed to destruction. He will oppose and will exalt himself over everything that is called God or is worshiped, so that he sets himself up in God’s temple, proclaiming himself to be God.

Recently I watched the movie 2012 and like all big blockbusters, this one kept me entertained. There has been a lot of talk about this movie and the predictions that were the foundation of it. The Mayans claimed 2012 was the year and so did many people from centuries ago and several people live today trying to prove its validity. In today’s passage, Paul reminds us that Jesus will not return until the rebellion of man is complete to a point where Satan through humankind will crown himself over God and will be worshipped. What are we therefore expected to do and is it time yet?

We were reminded in 1 Thessalonians 5 that the Lord will come like a thief in the night when no one expects him to. This could be now or a 1,000 years from now and only God the Father knows when. Jesus said in Matthew 24:43-44 that if we knew when He was coming, wouldn’t we be all prepared just before He came but until then live like we wanted to in sin? Therefore His return would be at a time we do not expect and so we have to always be prepared. Then what about the signs Paul spoke about? As we look around our world, it seems like Satan is getting more control whether in terms of a one world governance, unified currency, separating religion form state, from school and from daily lives, etc. We do not know when the time will come but we do know that it will be sudden and so we are reminded to be on alert always, to live our lives to the fullest for Jesus Christ who saved us from destruction, to serve those around us His love and to be beacons of light in this dark world. Are you living the life worthy of His name or are you looking for the signs to start?

Matthew 24:43-44 If the owner of the house had known at what time of night the thief was coming, he would have kept watch and would not have let his house be broken into. So you also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him.
