Genesis 4:1-8 Now the man had relations with his wife Eve, and she conceived and gave birth to Cain, and she said, “I have gotten a manchild with the help of the LORD.” Again, she gave birth to his brother Abel. And Abel was a keeper of flocks, but Cain was a tiller of the ground. So it came about in the course of time that Cain brought an offering to the LORD of the fruit of the ground. Abel, on his part also brought of the firstlings of his flock and of their fat portions. And the LORD had regard for Abel and for his offering; but for Cain and for his offering He had no regard. So Cain became very angry and his countenance fell. Then the LORD said to Cain, “Why are you angry? And why has your countenance fallen? “If you do well, will not your countenance be lifted up? And if you do not do well, sin is crouching at the door; and its desire is for you, but you must master it.” Cain told Abel his brother. And it came about when they were in the field, that Cain rose up against Abel his brother and killed him.

James 1:2-4, 12-15
Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance. When tempted, no one should say, “God is tempting me.” For God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does he tempt anyone; but each one is tempted when, by his own evil desire, he is dragged away and enticed. Then, after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, gives birth to death.

James was Jesus’ younger brother and wrote the first epistle of the new testament. Of the many topics in today’s chapter, trials caught my eye as it is a reality we live with and it is what shakes our faith and tests us. In the last few weeks, my family and I have been enduring a lot because of moving homes, additional work assignments and other commitments. This has put a strain on our relationship, brought stress in abundance and caused us to behave in ways we would not consider normal. It is natural to wonder why God would throw all this in our face at the same time and put us through such a trying time and then God speaks through His word saying that we should consider it pure joy to face trials! What is God saying to us today and what is the point if our faith is going to cause us to only suffer? (more…)
