Genesis 34:1-3,13,30 Now Dinah, the daughter Leah had borne to Jacob, went out to visit the women of the land. When Shechem son of Hamor the Hivite, the ruler of that area, saw her, he took her and violated her. His heart was drawn to Dinah daughter of Jacob, and he loved the girl and spoke tenderly to her… Because their sister Dinah had been defiled, Jacob’s sons replied deceitfully as they spoke to Shechem and his father Hamor… Then Jacob said to Simeon and Levi, “You have brought trouble on me by making me a stench to the Canaanites and Perizzites, the people living in this land. We are few in number, and if they join forces against me and attack me, I and my household will be destroyed.”

When I read this chapter, my first reaction was to cringe because of what Simeon and Levi did. Their actions did not reflect well on their family and us as their family in Christ.

I was wondering if I might be able to skip this chapter and look for something more suitable to share but with God, there is nothing in His word that He does not speak to us through and therefore I’m at it.

What is the point that God is speaking to us through this horrible incident and is this just a dark reality of our faith? (more…)

2 Peter 3:8-13

But do not forget this one thing, dear friends: With the Lord a day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like a day. The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance. But the day of the Lord will come like a thief. The heavens will disappear with a roar; the elements will be destroyed by fire, and the earth and everything in it will be laid bare. Since everything will be destroyed in this way, what kind of people ought you to be? You ought to live holy and godly lives as you look forward to the day of God and speed its coming. That day will bring about the destruction of the heavens by fire, and the elements will melt in the heat. But in keeping with his promise we are looking forward to a new heaven and a new earth, the home of righteousness.

As I continue to listen to the news from around the world, it seems more and more apparent that the only possible change in our world  for sanity and peaceable living is a total reconstruction of humanity but that would not work because we will remain sinful and continue to be selfish by nature, therefore bringing us back to where we are. Some of us might live in very surroundings and are possibly sheltered from the harsh realities of the 21st century but a brief glance at world news will show us how broken our world is. Also, the peaceful lives that we lead are often peaceful because we are made to think that everything is well but a simple dipstick check of how people are doing around us will show that everyone is strained by the burden of suffering. People with more worry because they have more to lose, those with less worry about how they will survive and those in-between are never at peace about where they are. In all this confusion called life, where is God and what is the answer He offers us? (more…)

Hebrews 10:32-39
Remember those earlier days after you had received the light, when you stood your ground in a great contest in the face of suffering. Sometimes you were publicly exposed to insult and persecution; at other times you stood side by side with those who were so treated. You sympathized with those in prison and joyfully accepted the confiscation of your property, because you knew that you yourselves had better and lasting possessions. So do not throw away your confidence; it will be richly rewarded. You need to persevere so that when you have done the will of God, you will receive what he has promised. For in just a very little while, “He who is coming will come and will not delay. But my righteous one will live by faith. And if he shrinks back, I will not be pleased with him.” But we are not of those who shrink back and are destroyed, but of those who believe and are saved.

Yesterday I was convicted by the Lord of trying to seek wisdom from the world about Him when I had His word in my hands and His spirit in my heart directing me towards Him. My earnest prayer now is that I am remembered as a signpost for Christ directing people to Him rather than being a fountain of wisdom seeking people to glorify me and in the same way I learn to yearn for Christ from His word and be encouraged by His children, not the other way around. When I first encountered Jesus Christ, it was a momentous period of my life and I did not live for the pleasures of this world but to serve Him with my life. My goals and aspirations were centered on Him and all I wanted was more of Jesus in me at whatever the cost was. Where did I lose that yearning, how can I have it back and what is God saying to us today? (more…)

Ephesians 2:14-18, 22
For he himself is our peace, who has made the two one and has destroyed the barrier, the dividing wall of hostility, by abolishing in his flesh the law with its commandments and regulations. His purpose was to create in himself one new man out of the two, thus making peace, and in this one body to reconcile both of them to God through the cross, by which he put to death their hostility. He came and preached peace to you who were far away and peace to those who were near. For through him we both have access to the Father by one Spirit… And in him you too are being built together to become a dwelling in which God lives by his Spirit.

As we continue to read through the rich text in the book of Ephesians, I struggle to choose the right passage as there is so much the Lord is speaking to me today. Even though I might chose a certain portion, I do encourage you to click the link and read the entire chapter to get a good sense of what God is speaking to us. Paul’s ministry was to the Gentiles (non-Jews) and the two people becoming one is about us, non-Jews, being reconciled with the Jews to become God’s chosen people. What hostility is he referring to one might wonder. With the current situation in the Gaza strip and the questionable response of the Israelites, it is a challenge to understand what God is doing but lets not focus on current affairs and politics but rather keep our focus on what God is saying to us today.

When I consider the life of Jesus, I see peace throughout His life here on earth even though he was troubled, betrayed, cheated, lied to, condoned, crushed and given the lowly punishment of death on a cross for no sin of His own. During His earthly stay, Jesus was constantly working to reconcile man to God and His message was one of hope. When we look around at life today, the last thing one can find is peace as there is strife and unrest globally. Having traveled to over 111 cities around the world, I am yet to find a peaceable place and the reason is that we are seeking peace in a selfish and broken place. Jesus however is offering us peaceful living in God’s presence for eternity and calls us, whether Jews or Gentiles, to be a part of His chosen family simply by faith in Him and what He came to do for us. My world is no longer driven by current affairs but by the leading of the Holy Spirit and I seek to glorify God in everything and live in peace with Him. What have you decided?

Isaiah 9:6 For a child will be born to us, a son will be given to us; And the government will rest on His shoulders; And His name will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace.

Galatians 2:18-21
If I rebuild what I destroyed, I prove that I am a lawbreaker. For through the law I died to the law so that I might live for God. I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. I do not set aside the grace of God, for if righteousness could be gained through the law, Christ died for nothing!

How is it that day after day, as we seek God through His word, we are filled with new and rich understanding of God and the learning never ceases? Will there be an end to this journey? I certainly hope not for if there is, we will lose respect for God and try to be the gods of our own lives which is a journey into the abyss of pointlessness and a fulfillment of Satan’s plans for mankind.

Paul explains that through our submission to Jesus Christ as our Lord and Saviour, we die to sin in His death and rise to righteousness through His resurrection therefore no longer living for ourselves but for God. We cannot attain righteousness by fulfilling the law which was why Jesus Christ came to be the bridge for us to God and therefore we can gain it only through Him, else His life and death is meaningless.

Are you wondering what the purpose of your life is or are you seeking meaning in your daily struggles? Are you trying in vain to live a life of contentment but not finding it? Do you have a hope for eternity or are you struggling to live for today without knowing what will happen if this world or your life comes to an end? Then call on the name of Jesus Christ and you will find meaning and purpose not just right now but eternally with Him!

Romans 8:10 If Christ is in you, though the body is dead because of sin, yet the spirit is alive because of righteousness.

2 Corinthians 4:7-10
But we have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this all-surpassing power is from God and not from us. We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed. We always carry around in our body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be revealed in our body.

Have you ever tried moulding clay pots using a potter’s wheel? I’ve seen it several times but never attempted it myself but I have tried using clay to make things and not been very successful. The wonderful thing about clay is that when baked, it is a strong container but a slight drop and it breaks into little pieces. Paul refers to us as jars of clay because we are delicately and beautifully made but break with the course of life itself. However, when we accept Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior, we are filled with his Holy Spirit that pieces us back together into a creation purposed by Him and for His glory.

This new creation deals with the drops of life, the discouragements, accidents, battles, but because it is now held together by God’s own spirit, it is not destroyed but glorifies God through the hardships. When we are down and out, God is up and able and in so living, we become his voice in this dark world. Are you carrying the weight of the world on your shoulders and unable to carry on? If so, you need Jesus, the lover of our souls who waits with arms wide open to carry our burdens and to transform us into His ambassadors. What are you waiting for?
