The Only And Greatest Security

Numbers 34 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Give these instructions to the Israelites: When you come into the land of Canaan, which I am giving you as your special possession, these will be the boundaries… Then Moses told the Israelites, “This territory is the homeland you are to divide among yourselves by sacred lot. The Lord has commanded that the land be divided among the nine and a half remaining tribes. The families of the tribes of Reuben, Gad, and half the tribe of Manasseh have already received their grants of land on the east side of the Jordan River, across from Jericho toward the sunrise.” And the Lord said to Moses, “Eleazar the priest and Joshua son of Nun are the men designated to divide the grants of land among the people. Enlist one leader from each tribe to help them with the task.

The saying ‘never count your chickens before they hatch’ certainly did not matter to this nation that stood at the extremities of the land they were about to divide. This whole division was to take place before they even conquered the land and instead of God choosing military leaders, He chose was who would divide the land in each tribe. What is God speaking to us today through this mysterious story?

It is easy to miss the key aspect of today’s chapter being that the Israelites were being instructed on their future inheritance, one that they had still not received. From my first reading, I assumed the land was theirs to divide but in reality, they were just at the borders of it and there was yet a battle to take place for control of this land.

My great concern at this point if I had been among these people would’ve been how to get ready for the great battles ahead. What strategies to employ, who are my resources, knowledge of my enemy, etc. but no one seemed to be caught up about it because they were being directed by a God who was very alive among them. What great confidence they must have had in God to be about His business and not fret like any person might without that assurance?

God’s confidence in His own plans is revealed when He declares who would divide the lands and what the borders would be. In the New Testament, Jesus revealed God’s foreknowledge when He said:

Jesus told them, “You will indeed drink from my bitter cup. But I have no right to say who will sit on my right or my left. My Father has prepared those places for the ones he has chosen.” Matthew 20:23 (NLT)

Compare that to another statement Paul recorded:

Furthermore, because we are united with Christ, we have received an inheritance from God, for he chose us in advance, and he makes everything work out according to his plan. Ephesians 1:11 (NLT)

Is it not amazing that God knows it all and is able to direct His faithful to carry out all that He set out for them? What confidence does this give us today when we are about our business living in times when there is no security or assurance around us? In a fast crumbling world where neither politicians nor governments have control, where sin prevails so blatantly that morality has lost face, where the earth trembles because of its misuse by man, one asks is there any hope and the answer is a clear YES but are we willing to accept and receive it?

In context to our lives today, this chapter speak clearly about our need to be about God’s business and walk in His direction and not fret about our fears and challenges. God fought the battles of His people then and does now also but we need to put our confidence in this Living GOD. We live in a time when the ruler of this world is satan and the battle is spiritual, not one we can fight but certainly one God is more than able to.

Is Jesus Christ the one in whom you put your trust and if so, how do you live knowing He is in you? If you have not put your trust in Him, I pray this chapter will give you reason to.
