Genesis 39:2-4,7-9,16-18,21,22 The LORD was with Joseph, so he became a successful man. And he was in the house of his master, the Egyptian. Now his master saw that the LORD was with him and how the LORD caused all that he did to prosper in his hand. So Joseph found favor in his sight and became his personal servant; and he made him overseer over his house, and all that he owned he put in his charge… It came about after these events that his master’s wife looked with desire at Joseph, and she said, “Lie with me.” But he refused and said to his master’s wife, “Behold, with me here, my master does not concern himself with anything in the house, and he has put all that he owns in my charge. “There is no one greater in this house than I, and he has withheld nothing from me except you, because you are his wife. How then could I do this great evil and sin against God?”… So she left his garment beside her until his master came home. Then she spoke to him with these words, “The Hebrew slave, whom you brought to us, came in to me to make sport of me; and as I raised my voice and screamed, he left his garment beside me and fled outside”… But the LORD was with Joseph and extended kindness to him, and gave him favor in the sight of the chief jailer. The chief jailer committed to Joseph’s charge all the prisoners who were in the jail; so that whatever was done there, he was responsible for it.

Joseph was sold into slavery, bought by Potiphar, given charge of everything Potiphar had, enticed by Potiphar’s wife to sleep with her but refused, falsely accused and sent into prison and again finds favor in the sight of the chief jailer only to be put in charge of the entire prison!

Remarkable story of how an honest and upright man of God was blessed for his righteousness and is that God’s message to us today?

Oftentimes, we see the obvious and are satisfied with it just to get on with life. In the busyness of our lives, we have little or no time to sit and ponder and this causes us to miss the little gems hidden under the obvious.

Joseph was given visions of greatness when he was back home and these visions caused his brothers to hate him more because it showed how he would rule over them.

The giver of these visions was God and the one who would deliver Joseph to that level of greatness was God alone. Joseph’s righteousness could never buy God’s favor but God’s will can never be displaced by man’s unrighteousness.

When Joseph was found worthy, it was not because he tried so hard but it was because God had transformed Joseph’s heart to make him worthy of respect in the eyes of all who dealt with him.

Potiphar and his household were not worthy in God’s sight but were blessed because of God’s blessing on Joseph.

The prison Joseph was thrown in probably was the worst of all the prisons and even in such a terrible place, God made Joseph find favor.

When we are transformed, not just changed but recreated in God’s image after we submit to Jesus as our Lord and Savior, the goodness in us is not because we are but because He is!

We, however, have to remember that we need to safeguard ourselves from falling into the clutches and yearnings of this world because God has been so good to us, just as Joseph confessed to Potiphar’s wife.

The challenging situations in our lives are but opportunities for God to work miraculously to show how He is above all else. So lets worship God regardless of our situations and let God reach out to the world through our transformed selves.

In His Loving Service,
ServantBoy

Given what Joseph went through, it’s hard to imagine how he held onto the dream. I think it’s as you said “it was not because he tried so hard but it was because God had transformed Joseph’s heart to make him worthy of respect in the eyes of all who dealt with him”

I can think of myself whatever I choose to think. God defines who I am. My righteousness? Not in the least bit. His goodness and graciousness are the reason I breathe. “When we are transformed, not just changed but recreated in God’s image after we submit to Jesus as our Lord and Savior, the goodness in us is not because we are but because He is!” Amen.

It’s easy to think that we do what God asks so therefore we deserve so and so … Joseph’s roundabout route to God’s destiny may not have been what He expected but in the end God did what He had promised. I face challenges daily, I don’t like them one bit but I’m learning to find His purpose and to allow Him to be glorified.

Vineet, thank you for being His instrument.

    God bless you,
    ann

      Hi Ann,

This morning, I wrote an email to the owners of a beautiful B&B my wife and I spent 2 nights at here in Vancouver, to thank them for their wonderful hospitality and the fact that God had blessed their home. During our stay, we got talking with them and realized they are believers which gave us much joy and comfort. As we spent time chatting we realized that their kids and grandkids are not saved and this was a big burden to them and we have been praying with them for God’s intervention.

When I read today’s passage and meditated on it, I was reminded that in our (Believers) lives, there are many reasons to celebrate and many painful moments like in Joseph’s. God permits and uses these situations to show His sovereignty over ever situation and his faithfulness. Therefore my every pain is turned into His glory and my every tear is used to wash his feet for He alone is worthy.

Thank you for taking time to comment and I pray that God will meet you at your point of need, minister to you and lift you up to be able to sing His praises regardless of the pain and frustration for eventually He is victorious.

      In Christ,
      Vineet

          Hi Ann,
I do hope I was not harsh in my response to you? I do not mean to preach at you but rather to clarify my post. Hope you understand.
          Blessings,

No! You were not… not at all 🙂

I`m very thankful for your prayers. I don`t always go back and reply to replies but I wanted to thank you for your prayers. I`m trusting God to answer them.

I am not offended at all ( You did nothing to offend me either 🙂 ) And you went to the trouble to check that I wasn`t offended. Thank you much!

            Blessings

`God permits and uses these situations to show His sovereignty over ever situation and his faithfulness. …`

He`s been faithful is playing over and over in my head. Thought I`d share it in light of the foregoing 🙂

There were times I couldn`t pray … but I`m thankful for those who carried us during those times :
    `When My Heart Looked Away
The Many Times I Could Not Pray
Still My God Was Faithful To Me`

`Therefore my every pain is turned into His glory and my every tear is used to wash his feet for He alone is worthy` He is so faithful!!

    I will yet praise,
    ann

      Hi Ann,
Just got the opportunity to watch the video you posted above and the words are so apt… He is faithful regardless! Thank you for being so gracious even though there is much at play in your life. Yes, praying for you and it is pure joy to stand in the gap for my family in Christ!

What a beautiful conversation going on here! 🙂 And, this post Vineet, energizes me with hope for all that God can and will do. I’ve been feeling so humbled lately and I can’t even tell you why. I think the enemy can try to take that and make me feel bad with it, small, unimportant, etc. But God used this post to help me understand what humble is about . . .being submitted to Him. And there is nothing more fun than that! 🙂 God bless you and your willingness to submit to Him!

The way you respond to every post with sincerity is so uplifting and I praise God for bringing you into my life to encourage me in my walk with Him. Praying for you Deb and for your precious little princess who is God’s gift to you and your family.
      In Christ,
      Vineet

  5. I just loved what you shared about this story. I never grow tired of seeing the Lord magnified in the word and in the testimony those who believe it. What a wonderful post!
