Revelation 18:1-3,8-11 After these things I saw another angel coming down from heaven, having great authority, and the earth was illumined with his glory. And he cried out with a mighty voice, saying, “Fallen, fallen is Babylon the great! She has become a dwelling place of demons and a prison of every unclean spirit, and a prison of every unclean and hateful bird. “For all the nations have drunk of the wine of the passion of her immorality, and the kings of the earth have committed acts of immorality with her, and the merchants of the earth have become rich by the wealth of her sensuality”… “For this reason in one day her plagues will come, pestilence and mourning and famine, and she will be burned up with fire; for the Lord God who judges her is strong. “And the kings of the earth, who committed acts of immorality and lived sensuously with her, will weep and lament over her when they see the smoke of her burning, standing at a distance because of the fear of her torment, saying, ‘Woe, woe, the great city, Babylon, the strong city! For in one hour your judgment has come.’ “And the merchants of the earth weep and mourn over her, because no one buys their cargoes any more

As I read chapter 18, my mind raced through the many countries, cities, power houses, etc. that could be referred here. Is it the commercial capitals of the world, the gambling cities, the largest corporations that drive the world economies??

Who could this great Babylon be and what could her sins be that God is so furious with her? Why is God so furious at this great city and what is He speaking to us this day through this great warning?

When I consider the achievements of man that we today can say have helped us progress, I can think of many great inventions and discoveries including  fire, the wheel to flight, plumbing the depth of the seas, computers, medical advances, etc.

It is not what we have done but who we give credit to. The problem with the world is not just success or progress but the fact that we as mankind are glorifying ourselves and God is now forgotten.

We love people who say that we are God, that we do not need to rely on anyone or anything else, that we can do it if we put our mind to it, self-help, belief in self, drawing from our own strength, me, my, I…

The battle is not consumerism, materialism or any other ism but simply self-glorification. We want to hold the keys to our own reality and define it as we would like it.

God warns us that this will only lead to defeat because He is above everyone and everything for He created us, this earth and the entire universe. He did not create us to forsake Him but to relate to Him and glorify Him before anything else.

There is no hope in us, there is no changing our circumstance to avoid God’s wrath because we have already gone too far but there is hope in Him alone for He is about to judge and we need to decide if we want to be judged or to be on the side of the judge.

If you have not entered into a relationship with Jesus, I pray that you will consider Him and open your heart to know Him for He is the loving Shepherd and wants to relate to you to save you from destruction and bless you with life eternal in Him.

If you have entered into a relationship with Jesus but have lost your way, I pray that you will call on Him today and ask Him to place you in His path and lead you back to being able to glorify Him and not yourself.

In His Loving Service,

Ezekiel 27:27 “Your wealth, your wares, your merchandise, Your sailors and your pilots, Your repairers of seams, your dealers in merchandise And all your men of war who are in you, With all your company that is in your midst, Will fall into the heart of the seas On the day of your overthrow.
