Hebrews 7:26-28
We need a chief priest who is holy, innocent, pure, set apart from sinners, and who has the highest position in heaven. We need a priest who doesn’t have to bring daily sacrifices as those chief priests did. First they brought sacrifices for their own sins, and then they brought sacrifices for the sins of the people. Jesus brought the sacrifice for the sins of the people once and for all when he sacrificed himself. Moses’ Teachings designated mortals as chief priests even though they had weaknesses. But God’s promise, which came after Moses’ Teachings, designated the Son who forever accomplished everything that God required.

Sometimes the word of God puts us in challenging positions in terms of understanding and applying what God speaks to us through it. Today’s chapter is one of those where the concept of priesthood is challenged because God puts the ultimate test to the role. Priests existed in the Bible from the time of Aaron and continues even today in different denominations of Christianity. They had a role of being the bridge between man and God as their lives were dedicated to serving God and interceding for man to God. They communicated with God, performed sacrifices to God and did everything required as intercessors. What then is God saying to us through this passage and chapter and how does it apply to us?

Pastors, elders, deacons are roles in the church that God has ordained for the purpose of shepherding the flock, teaching and directing followers of Christ and handling administrative roles. Intercession is now done by the living high priest Jesus Christ and therefore we can access God through His son Jesus alone who is the perfect high priest, holy, innocent, pure, set apart from sinners and who has the highest place in heaven! With Jesus Christ coming into the scene, things changed and the curtain between man and God, created because of our sinfulness, was torn down and we no longer needed to be separated from God. No longer were we required to sacrifice, no longer was communication with God restricted to a priest but we now have free access through the shed blood of our great High Priest, Jesus Christ who lives forever. Who is your high priest and are you worshiping God through His son Jesus Christ?

In His Loving Service,

2 Corinthians 5:21 God made him (Jesus Christ) who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.
