1 Thessalonians 5:5-11
You are all sons of the light and sons of the day. We do not belong to the night or to the darkness. So then, let us not be like others, who are asleep, but let us be alert and self-controlled. For those who sleep, sleep at night, and those who get drunk, get drunk at night. But since we belong to the day, let us be self-controlled, putting on faith and love as a breastplate, and the hope of salvation as a helmet. For God did not appoint us to suffer wrath but to receive salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ. He died for us so that, whether we are awake or asleep, we may live together with him. Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing.

Last evening, a dear friend of mine called to share heartbreaking news of his wife’s decision to annul their marriage by filing for a divorce. This young man was shaken at the very core and he could not believe it and asked me a question that seemed so hard to answer. Why did God permit him to be married to her when God knew this was not going to work specially after he asked God to only permit the marriage if it was God’s will. In these troubled times when we are surrounded by brokenness and suffering, why is God reminding us to be hopeful and when will He come and take us away from this suffering?

As I spoke with my friend, God led me to remind him of the life of Joseph who was a good kid but was betrayed by his own brothers, sold as a slave, imprisoned on false charges and finally was lifted by the pharaoh and blessed those who betrayed him. Also, I reminded my friend that God saves the lost and that’s whom we are. We are the worst of the worst that God saves, transforms and uses for His glory and therefore we should not consider suffering as loss but as gain because through suffering, we gain Christ and everything that comes from Him. As Christians, our hope is in an unseen God and our reward is in future, not at the present time. Therefore we are encouraged to keep focussed on this unseen God and wait eagerly for this future gift of life in God’s presence. We do not need to seek worldly pleasure to fill our hearts, it can never fill the void, we only need Jesus. Are you troubled, are you lost, are you seeking, then know that Jesus is standing at your door waiting to come in and love and transform you for His glory. Just ask Him in!

In His Loving Service,

Romans 8:24 For in hope we have been saved, but hope that is seen is not hope; for who hopes for what he already sees?

  1. Vineet, My heart goes out to your friend. God gave you a wonderful response to him. Just as Joseph’s brothers put themselves first, this young man’s wife has put herself first above the marriage that God has ordained for them. I will pray for strength and wisdom for your friend to always put God first, as Joseph did and was blessed. Peace, Linda

  2. Dear Vineet . . .God bless you as you comfort and yet encourage your friend. It was hard for me just reading it. I cried . . .I cry easy. Maybe just for all the hurting and suffering. But regardless of what we go through, He is there. Always there and always what we need. Thank you for strengthening us in His name! deb

Thank you for always being such an encourager to me. Those tears you cried are the same as the pain I felt for my friend when I heard him. I continue to pray that he will find his peace with God and Jesus will be the only one he turns to for help.

My heart was breaking as I read this post, your poor friend asking all of the same questions I asked when I was placed in that position many years ago. My prayer was “God, I know you don’t condone divorce, so please heal this marriage”. But it was not meant to be. Even when equally yoked at first, one can be led away from God while the other remains, and although I did not understand it at the time, it now does make sense. God chooses how to allow us to be broken that we may better serve Him or a future purpose for Him. While I detest divorce, it is a sin like many other sins. I am happy in my brokenness though now, because without being broken in many ways, divorce being one of them, I could never serve the way he has prepared me to. God Bless

I was explaining to my friend about death to relate to his loss. My father in law passed away 2 days after my son was born and it was such a shock for us. My mom in law kept asking why and we knew God was sovereign and had a plan and reason and so we just left our questions at His feet. 11 years later, I can tell you that because of this loss, my mother in law found hope in Jesus and today she ministers to widows in India and abroad and has a blessed ministry serving Jesus to them. It is such a joy for her and us and just like you said, she praises God for her suffering for it gave her more reasons to praise God. Thank you for sharing your story and I pray God’s blessing on you as you minister His word to the hurting and lost.
